Design Principles - Project 3
Project 3 - Visual Analysis
This weeks lecture was on Visual Analysis. Visual analysis is studying the different design elements in an artwork and explaining it in words. The Analysis is in 3 phases which is observation, analysis and interpretation. This project is divided into 2 parts. The first part is visual analysis of a poster (the 3 phases). The second part is using that visual analysis to create a piece of our own.
Part 1
The poster I picked is a fan made poster of Darksouls, which is a game I really enjoy and The poster looks very visually pleasing.
Visual Analysis
The poster is in a portrait format. The main subject is the person in the lower middle of the piece. The main subject is highest in contrast, which the contrast fading as the elements go up. The colors are tones of brown, or 'coffee' color. There are coffee art textures in the piece as well, or these textures could be showing and old piece of paper. The foreground is made of mountains and a sky with the clouds and a sun in the sky portion of it.
The overall feel of the poster is minimal design. The poster is somewhat symmetrical but not completely to the where it would be and mirror image if it was halved. The main subject is highest in contrast to emphasize the focus on the person. the person has a shadow below him to show the ground hes on. The mountains is the background fall in contrast as it goes up to show depth and perspective. The mountains also lead the viewer to the main subject. The lines used are very harsh and sharp lines overall.
To interpret this image you have know a bit about the game. Darksouls has really deep lore and story which is still not fully figured out to this day. This is what makes this game interesting for a lot of people. First interpretation I take the is the main on his knees with arrows in his body. To me this shows how unforgiving this game is, which is also what this game is known for. It shows how helpless you are trying to beat this game and how many times you are forced to to see the 'You Died' screen. The texture and colors could be referring to the the time which the game is set in The brown color is common is aged books, Thus showing this game is a fantasy world set in really olden times where dragons and castles are common. The large mountains could be a reference to the amazing environment and landscapes this game is set in. A lot of castles and day time outdoor environments are the overall feel of this game. It could also be taken in the form that many boss battles in this game are of really large bosses that dwarf the character and absolutely destroy you. Finally the Sun plays an important part in this game which could be why the character is looking at the sun, There are a lot of references in lore to the sun and items also related to it. Although it won't be obvious to a first time player, The mentions are vague but when you started to notice them, They are everywhere. This is a recurring theme of this game as a first time player wouldn't even understand the main story of this game because of how vague everything is. It requires a lot of attention to detail and focus to understand and play this game which is why I decided to do my visual analysis on this piece. Any dark souls related thing can be interpreted in many ways and thats what makes this amazing.
Part 2
Part to is to create an art work using the visual analysis. I decided to make an art work for Bloodborne which is another game by Fromsoftware. I felt it would be fitting as the inspiration is Darksouls. First I did research on some of the elements of bloodborne which I could use to create the artform in a similar form

I wanted to make it in illustrator as the pentool seems like the perfect tool to make a similar minimalist artwork. I used colors by sampling some from the above pics. I didnt use too many colors as the reference darksouls poster also did not.
