LECTURES

Week 7: 29/05/20 Project Briefing

We were given the briefing for project 2a. We have to design our very own typeface, starting from scratch. We were shown a video of how typefaces are made to get a basic idea. We can look back at lecture of week 5 as it was about font design. In class we had to pick a type face for reference and do sketches.

Week 8 : 05/06/2020 Feedback Session

Todays session was feedback on the digitized fonts for all students, and tutorial on how to use fontlab to make your digitized font into and actual font.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2 / Project 2A

For project 2A, We have to design our own typeface from scratch. We were given a select number of characters to design in either uppercase or lowercase. The letters were : a i m e p y t g d o b ! , .
First we chose a reference typeface, from the 10 typefaces we were given earlier. I Chose futura std. Then we had to make analyse the letters of these by drawing the guides and other shapes and elements so we can really see the symmetry and detail in it. After doing so we had to make rough sketches, while referring to the futura typeface, of our own typeface. I chose Futura because I have always favoured simple, low contrast typefaces and I wanted make one like that.

From the sketches, I decided to make a tight sketch for Gap and Tall, because I like those the most.

Before digitizing I decided to do some research on different fonts. One that really interested me was runic lettering. Because I am huge fan of Norse mythology and God of War. I wanted to have some inspiration from runic alphabet.

I used the guides I made from the analysis exercise. I changed the vertical lines to be a bit close together the the typeface im making s going to be narrow and tall. I used the line tool with a stroke size of 25, while lowering it to 20 for some lines. I also used the elliptical tool to curve some edges.

I decided to change the letters B, P and the characters to represent the runic feel more.

After getting feedback I was advised to increase the weight of the letters so I increased it to stroke size 50. Also learnt how to make the edges rounded without using the elliptical tool. I removed all the circles and make the stroke edges round. I also remade the comma to a more simple one and moved it to the baseline.

After the letters were done, I followed the tutorial and copied all the letters over to fontlab. Fontlab was not optimized for my laptop for some reason and I had a really hard time playing with it. It was almost impossible to change the values in the metrics tab. But I managed to get most of it done with a strain on my eye.

After saving the file and generating font, I installed it and made the poster with the given text 'I AM A TYPE GOD, OBEY ME!' Kerning and tracking was adjusted in Illustrator.

FEEDBACK

Week 7
Specific Feedback - Mr. vinod like my Tall sketch and told me to go ahead and digitize it
General feedback - no general feedback

Week 8
Specific Feedback - Typeface was a but narrow, so I was asked to increase the weight of it. And to move the comma and fullstop to the bottom
General feedback - It was a feedback session so took some notes on how i can improve during other students sessions.

REFLECTIONS

Week 7

Experience: Learned to analyse letters, and create guides.

Observation: Letters are not 100% symmetrical when analysed

Findings: Making a typeface is really difficult

Week 8

Experience: Learned to make the stroke edges rounded, Which made my work even easier than the way I initially did it.

Observation: Other students had some very interesting typeface designs

Findings: Mr. Vinod showed a video at the start of the class that highlighted the effects of online education on mental health and I found it to be very interesting.
