Design Principles - Week 5 Symbol Imagery & Typography
Week 5
This weeks exercise was on Symbols and typography. Graphic symbols can be classified into three parts. Pictorial, Abstract and Arbitrary symbols. Pictorial symbols are simplified images that are highly related or represents something often including texts to accompany it. Abstract symbols are even simpler images without text to show what its related to. Arbitrary symbols usually have no relations to its action or whatnot. People tend to recognize these symbols regardless of its relation, since we are so familiar with most of them. Then comes Typography which is using text to show the composition of something.
Class Exercise
This weeks exercise is to make 2 artworks, One for Arbitrary symbol and one for typography.
We must create our own arbitrary symbol and create a typographic image with a picture we took.
Arbitrary Symbol
For this one i made some sketches on Photoshop.

I decided to go with Disconnect one because it fits the description of arbitrary symbol most. I used the pentool in Illustrator to make the symbol.

| Arbitrary symbol for disconnect |
This one fit the description most for me because at first glance it just looks like lines and has nothing to do with the action. It represents disconnect in a very subtle and simple way showing the vertical line disconnecting the horizontal line. This could easy for people to get used to and register in their brain.
Typography
I used an image I took last year from my balcony. Its a landscape pic of Subang Jaya.
