Design Principles - Week 2 Emphasis & Balance

Week 2

This weeks lecture was about the design principles Emphasis and Balance. Emphasis shows the technique used to draw the audiences attention to a certain subject using contrasting elements or colors or graphics and lines leading into it. Balance shows how symmetry is used to create designs, going into the basics of different types of symmetry used within this principle.

Excercise 2

This exercise required you to make 2 artworks based on each principle emphasis and balance.

Emphasis

For emphasis I decided to use color to bring attention to my subject, I started with a basic sketch on paper and then after outlining with a marker i added colors with a sharpie for the subject and some really light color using color pencils so that it does not draw attention way from the subject. My physical drawing skills aren't that good but I tried to apply the design principle regardless drawing skills.

Balance

For balance I decided to do something really simple that still captures the design principle very well. I tried different sketches and decided to do a literal balance scale that is symmetrical on both sides.Meaning when split in half one side will be a reflection of the other.

Basic sketch with pencil
Final image - outlined and filled with black marker to keep it simple
