Design Principles - Week 1 Contrast & Gestalt Theoroy

Week 1

Week 1's lecture was about different elements of design, contrast and what it is. It also showed how contrast was used in different contexts, whether it was to emphasize on a subject or to show emotion. The lecture also showed how contrast was used to show the Gestalt theory which is when an image forms 2 images using the negative space.

Excercise 1

We were given 2 exercises. Make 1 image to show contrast and 1 image using the Gestalt theory. First step is to sketch them out and 2nd step would be to do it on black and white paper. I do not have any paper at the moment so I did my sketches in Adobe Illustrator.

Contrast

For this one first I decided to do a sloth. At first I thought we had to combine both gestalt and contrast so i was struggling a bit.

I used these 2 images as a reference to make it
I cut out the bird and made some circles to replicate the face of a sloth

Final image ended up looking like this

After getting feedback i decided to redo the whole thing. Trying to make a sloth, i decided it would be easier to make a panda so i went whith that

Panda final sketch
This was very basic, I used only circled to make the panda and some rectangles to make bamboo. I looked up how a panda looks and realized i can make one with just circles.

Gestalt Theory

For this exercise I looked up animals to decide which one to do. While trying to make the sloth in the contrast exercise I found a clip-art of a whales tail.

Whale tail clipart used.
I was initially trying to incorporate this into the sloth but I realized it looks like the face of an owl. So I decided to make a whale owl.

Added eyes with elliptical tool

Added a body and some fins so that it resembles a whale.

Rotated it a little bit and gave a face to the whale

After consulting and getting feedback I changed the design a bit according to the feedback I was given.

After consultation, the greenlight was given on both my sketches so now i  can move onto the next step, which is making it on paper. I cut out the parts and remade these on paper. I didnt have any contrasting colors. only a4 size paper and printer so I printed out black color to make it.

It does not look perfect but it looks good. I need to improve my cutter and scissor skills to make these look better.
