LECTURES

Week 515/05/20 Project Briefing

Not a lecture, but we were briefed about what to be done for project 1. We were told to make an editorial piece from tone of the given texts. He had to design a header using our experience in type expression and then the layout using the experience from formatting exercises. First we were told to make rough and tight sketches before digitizing them.

Week 6: 22/05/2020 Feedback Session

No lecture but we had to watch our lecturers give feedback to every students and then take notes along the way to improve our work.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2 / Project 1

For project 1, we are to make an editorial piece from the texts given. We had a few to select from and the one I chose is titled ''A Designers Code of Ethics" I chose this because I had a few ideas of how to make the header and the layout seemed simpler than the other ones to do. We have to use Adobe Indesign to make it but the header can be done on Adobe Illustrator.

For my first sketches i emphasized on the the word ''Design''. I make the header in different shapes or just alignments. After making some rough sketches and getting feedback, I was told to emphasize more the word ''Ethics''. So i did research online and chose to make a thought bubble as a final sketch because ethics has a lot to do with the mind.

I finalized on making tight sketch 3 and 4 on illustrator. I chose 3 because circle represents the code of ethics and the header not going out of it implies a person is following the code. The thought bubble represents the code in the mind of someone.

I made the the outline of the header 2 using the elliptical tool and the path text tool to curve the text around it. The heading text is in a box, which taken from one of my sketches. For header 3, I used a thought bubble template and curved the text around it using the path text tool. I chose this one as the final header. Next I moved on to different alignments and checked which ones worked best.

When i finalized my layout, I adjusted the ragging, line alignments, and all other things minor adjustments to be done. For the text i use Futura std type family with a point size of 9pts and a leading of 11.5pts. Paragraph spacing was adjusted according to the leading.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
Specific Feedback - Redo week 3 exercise as I lost the files, minor adjustments to week 4 exercise to be done & a new composition for last part.

General feedback - Got a lot of feedback during other students feedback time and made adjustments to my work as it was going on.

Week 6
Specific Feedback - Project 1 headline looks good, Layout was safe but work on other layouts. If others dont work go back to original one.

General feedback - Got a lot of feedback during other students feedback time and made adjustments to my work as it was going on.

REFLECTIONS

Week 5

Experience: Text formatting adjusting after feedback

Observation: Listening to others feedback helps a lot.

Findings: Learning the advantages of taking notes during lecture and feedback.

Week 6

Experience: Learning to make the Project 1 headline I sketched out in Adobe Illustrator.

Observation: Listening to others feedback helps a lot.

Findings: Making a layout for project takes a lot of trial and error.

Week 6

Did research on how to typographically express the word "Ethics". Most results show it has a connection to the mind or thought. A persons mental capacity or choice to follow a certain set of rules or codes. Which is why decided to finalize on the thought bubble design for the headline.
